# Snow Leopard of Uttarakhand The snow leopard (Panthera uncia) is one of nature's most extraordinary and elusive big cats. Uttarakhand's high-altitude terrain represents the southernmost extent of the snow leopard's Indian range. Snow leopards inhabit rocky terrain above 3,000 metres in summer, descending to lower elevations in winter following their prey — primarily blue sheep (bharal), Himalayan tahr, marmots, and pikas. Their pale smoky grey coat with dark rosettes provides perfect camouflage. Major protected habitats include the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve, Gangotri National Park, and Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary.
